The Black Bell Attic Key and Ladder: How to Get Up to the Attic (Chapter 1)

Getting into the attic in The Black Bell Chapter 1 takes two finds: a key from the piano room and a ladder from the basement. The order matters — the game only sends you looking for the ladder after the attic door is already unlocked — so key first, ladder second, then climb.

1. Reach the locked attic door

The attic becomes reachable after you restore power and the voice sends you upstairs to check the old office on the second floor. (If you're still on those objectives, the Chapter 1 walkthrough covers them in order.) When you reach the attic door, it's locked, and the voice points you to the key: "I think there might be a key in the piano room. Check there."

2. Take the attic key from the piano room

Head to the piano room — the same room full of mannequins, which has its own earlier puzzle covered in the mannequin puzzle guide. Search the room and the attic key appears there; grab it, walk back to the attic door, and it opens — "Doors open. Good."

3. Find the ladder in the basement

Unlocking the door triggers the next prompt: "You'll need something to get up there. Look for a ladder." This objective doesn't appear until the door is open, so there's no point hunting for a ladder early.

The ladder is in the basement. One player remembered mid-search, "There was a ladder in the basement. I remember seeing a ladder in the basement," and tracked it down on the far side of the basement after first picking up an object that turned out not to count as a ladder. If the first ladder-shaped thing you grab doesn't work, sweep the rest of the basement.

4. Carry the ladder back and climb up

Take the ladder to the attic entrance and climb up into the attic.

Once you're inside

The voice immediately moves you along: "You're close. There should be a hidden wall somewhere in that room. Find a way to open it. And when you do, take the black bell."
