The Black Bell Monster Guide: Surviving the Chapter 2 Flooded Tunnels

The creature in The Black Bell's Chapter 2 lower tunnels hunts by sound. Stay quiet, hide in lockers instead of running, and turn all four valves without being caught.

Stay quiet and use the lockers. The creature in The Black Bell's Chapter 2 lower tunnels hunts by sound, and Arthur's warning doubles as your survival plan: if it sees you, don't try to outrun it — find somewhere to hide.

The Black Bell Chapter 2 title card: the pale creature crouched in a red-lit chamber above the glowing seal circle, with bells on stone pedestals.

Where you meet the creature

The encounter begins when you drop through the floor hatch marked LEAVE THE PEARL into the green, flooded lower tunnels. Your objective becomes DRAIN THE WATER with a Valves: 0/4 counter, and Arthur warns you as the valves are being turned: "Listen carefully. You're not alone down there. It hunts by sound. Stay quiet. And if it sees you, don't try to outrun it. Find somewhere to hide."

What he's warning about is a pale, lanky humanoid that patrols the flooded corridors while you search for the four valves — the four valves puzzle covers those turns in detail.

How to get through without being caught

  • Stay quiet while it's nearby. This is the rule Arthur gives, and it's how surviving players behave: in one co-op run, as soon as the threat appeared, one player told the other "it's the sound, we have to stay silent," and they stopped making noise — and stopped talking — while it was close.
  • If it spots you, hide instead of running. Arthur is explicit that you can't outrun it.
  • Know what a catch costs. The creature can catch a player it spots or hears. In one recorded co-op run, the caught player simply respawned back at the spawn and the run continued from there, with the valve objective still to be completed.

The lockers are your hiding spots

Metal lockers are placed throughout the tunnels for exactly this purpose. Duck inside and wait while the creature passes in front of the locker door — from inside you get a narrow view of the flooded corridor — then use the E – LEAVE LOCKER prompt once it has moved on and keep working toward the next valve.

After the water drains

The fourth valve is your way out: once it brings the counter to Valves: 4/4, the water drains and glowing white chevrons light up along the floor to mark the escape route. There's no need to get careless on the way out, though — in one playthrough, after the water drained, a player still told his teammates to crouch down while moving through the area. Moving carefully until you're clear costs nothing.
