The Black Bell Beginner Tips: Objectives, Hiding and the Bell Trial
New to The Black Bell? Learn to follow the objectives, read prompts and hints, stay silent around the sound-hunting creature and recover from the bell trial.
The Black Bell gives you one job — retrieve the Black Pearl from the abandoned house — and then spends the rest of the game testing whether you stick to it. New players get through by doing four things well: follow the radio instructor’s objectives in order, read every prompt and hint literally, stay silent when the creature is near, and treat a failed bell trial as a retry rather than a dead run.
Follow the objectives in order
A radio voice feeds you Chapter 1 one instruction at a time: follow the road to the house, find the breaker downstairs and get the lights back on, start with the old office on the second floor, check the piano room for the key to the locked door, look for a ladder to reach the attic, then find a way to open the hidden wall in that room. The instructions chain — each objective points to the next step — so when you feel stuck, re-read the current instruction instead of wandering. That includes the quiet ones: “don’t wander too far” is an instruction, not flavor text.
For the full room-by-room route, the chapter 1 walkthrough covers every step; what follows here are the habits that keep you alive.
Read prompts and hints literally
The interface tells you what to do, so trust it. Documented prompts (as shown on PC) include “Press E” to use the breaker, “SEARCH FOR AN EXIT” and “Push harder” in the duct escape, and “E – LEAVE LOCKER” at the tunnel lockers; Chapter 2 also opens in a corridor with a flashlight toggle bound to F. Progress is tracked on screen too — the tunnels show a Valves: 0/4 counter, so you always know how many valves are left. On mobile or console, treat these labels as the PC display and use the interact control your device shows.
In-game text is just as literal. In the piano room, the hint “They watch, do not let them watch” means exactly that: rotate the mannequins until none of them are watching, and the puzzle progresses toward the locked door’s key. The obvious guess of turning them all to face the piano does nothing until you reverse it. When a hint reads like an instruction, follow it — the mannequin puzzle guide explains the room in full.
Don’t obey every voice you hear
At the end of Chapter 1, in the hidden-wall room, a voice claiming to be your instructor tells you to “take the black bell.” Don’t. The real instructor cuts in with the warning that sums up the whole game: “Whatever you do, don’t listen to me. It’s not me.” Something in the house can mimic voices, his included, and your mission was always the pearl — players who obeyed the fake instruction and grabbed the bell died on the spot and restarted. If a voice tells you the opposite of your original objective, that contradiction is the tell. The bell's story is its own; as a beginner, you were sent for the pearl.
Stay quiet in the flooded tunnels
Chapter 2 sends you down into flooded lower tunnels patrolled by a pale, lanky humanoid creature that hunts by sound. The instructor’s rule covers the whole section: “Stay quiet. And if it sees you, don’t try to outrun it. Find somewhere to hide.” In practice that means three things: don’t step in the water, don’t make noise while it is near, and use the metal lockers placed through the tunnels. Duck inside, wait while the creature passes in front of the door, then step out once it moves on — the “E – LEAVE LOCKER” prompt tells you when you can. The monster guide goes deeper into how it patrols.
Keep the Chapter 2 chain in order
Chapter 2 chains four tracked objectives, each with its own target:
| Objective | Target |
|---|---|
| Find the missing parts | 1 lever and 1 wheel — you need both to open the gate |
| Drain the water | 4 valves, tracked as Valves: 0/4 |
| Silence the bells | 8 bells |
| Final choice | The Black Pearl or escape |
Work them in that order. Collect the lever and wheel before the gate, then turn all four valves — after the fourth, the water drains and glowing floor chevrons light up the escape route. Follow the chevrons into the ducts, where the “SEARCH FOR AN EXIT” and “Push harder” prompts carry you out. The chapter 2 walkthrough maps the whole sequence.
Recover from the bell trial
The chapter’s final challenge is the SILENCE THE BELLS trial at a sealed gate, played out on a circular stone altar: eight bells chime in sequence, and each must be silenced before its chime finishes. Missing a single bell ends the attempt instantly with a creature kill and the message “THE SEAL REJECTED YOU.”
Two things make the trial recoverable. First, you can retry after a failure — one missed chime restarts the sequence instead of ending your run. Second, the win condition never changes: silence all eight and the seal opens. So when you fail, go again with a plan — watch the sequence, silence the bell that is currently ringing, and don’t rush ahead of it. The eight bells puzzle page breaks the trial down in detail.
The whole rulebook in one line
You were sent for the pearl: follow the instructor’s objectives in order, treat prompts and hints as literal instructions, stay silent while the creature hunts, and retry the trial when the seal rejects you. When you’re ready for everything mapped end to end, the chapter 1 walkthrough picks up where these habits leave off, and chapter 2 carries you to the final choice.
