The Black Bell Black Pearl Guide: Where It Appears and What It Does
Where the Black Pearl appears in The Black Bell — the Chapter 1 clue trail, the LEAVE THE PEARL hatch, and the final altar choice that decides your ending.
The Black Pearl is the reason your character sets foot in the house at all — and an item you can't actually take until the final scene of Chapter 2, if you choose to take it at all. It is the mission objective from the opening radio call, the target of the Chapter 1 clue trail, and, when it finally appears on a ritual altar, half of the game's last decision: take the Pearl or escape and live.
The Pearl is the mission from minute one
The premise hands you a simple brief: "You were sent to retrieve a Black Pearl from an abandoned house deep in the forest... Find the pearl. Explore the house. Follow the instructions." The radio voice repeats it once you're inside: "You're looking for something inside. A black pearl. Find it, bring it back, and you're done."
The same voice attaches one hard rule to the job — somewhere in that house is a black bell, and you must not touch it. Keep that warning in mind, because the Pearl's trail and the bell are about to cross.
Chapter 1: chasing the Pearl without ever holding it
The search starts once the power is back on. "Now find the pearl," the radio says. "Start with the old office. It should be on the second floor."
The old office holds the first real clue. A lever inside opens a secret room with an empty case and a note underneath it: "The pearl is no longer safe in this room. I moved it closer to heaven, where the house cannot reach it." The new objective — find a way up — points at the attic, which takes a key from the piano room and a ladder to reach. The Chapter 1 walkthrough and the attic key and ladder guide cover that stretch step by step.
The attic's hidden-wall room is where the hunt hits its trick. The pearl and the bell both sit in that room, but the voice on the radio says "take the black bell" — the exact thing you were warned never to touch. Multiple playthroughs end this scene the same way: the Pearl is not taken. One player went for the pearl anyway and still came away with the wrong object: "I went for the pearl. But I have the bell." The real radio denies giving the order — "I never told you that" — and a later voice explains the trick: "Something down here can mimic voices. Mine included."
So Chapter 1 closes with the Pearl still out of reach, and the mission rolls on into Chapter 2.
Chapter 2: the hatch that names the Pearl
Even before you see it, the Pearl stays pinned to the story. Beyond the gate in Chapter 2, a floor hatch marked LEAVE THE PEARL drops you into the flooded lower tunnels, and the chapter's objective list builds toward one final entry: "Final choice | The Black Pearl or escape." The Chapter 2 walkthrough follows that route in order.
The altar: take the Pearl or escape
The Pearl itself finally appears in the flesh after the SILENCE THE BELLS trial. In the ritual hall at the end of Chapter 2 it rests on an altar, and the game's last decision happens right there: take THE BLACK PEARL or follow the route labeled ESCAPE. The prompt spells it out — "CHOOSE. THE PEARL OR ESCAPE AND LIVE" — while graffiti nearby warns DONT TRUST HIM.
Leaving the Pearl on the altar and dropping into the escape tunnel is what triggers the Good Ending; the results screen confirms "you escaped without taking the Pearl." The full route is covered in our Good Ending guide.
Why the voice keeps pushing you toward it
The radio voice steering the whole hunt belongs to Arthur Gray — the game ties his voice to a hidden portrait during Chapter 2. His behavior maps directly onto the Pearl: helpful the entire time you work toward it, frantic at the altar ("You can't leave the pearl. Just get back up there now"), and hostile the moment you refuse it. In the path where the player does take it, his line is "You took it. I'm sorry. I had no other choice."
Where the Pearl appears, at a glance
| Moment | The Pearl's role |
|---|---|
| Chapter 1 opening | The stated mission: find the pearl and bring it back |
| Old office secret room | An empty case and a note: the Pearl was moved "closer to heaven" |
| Attic hidden-wall room | Pearl and bell both present, but a mimic voice tricks the player — the Pearl isn't taken |
| Chapter 2 floor hatch | The tunnel route begins at a hatch marked LEAVE THE PEARL |
| Ritual hall, Chapter 2 finale | The Pearl appears on the altar for the final choice: take it or escape |
The short version: The Black Bell keeps its treasure just out of reach for almost the entire game. The Pearl exists as an objective, a paper trail, and bait for the mimic's trick — and the one moment the game lets you actually decide what to do with it is also the choice that decides your ending.
